March 4th – Mulberry surprise

Green Crab Spider

1/80″, f8, ISO 6400

We have a resident mulberry tree that’s popular in the neighbourhood. Not so much from the kids in the area, but the local fauna were very pleased to see it in full fruit.

Every few days we would have to relieve the tree of the burden of the thousands of ripe berries. But it’s not until gathered in a punnet on the bench do you realise how much micro-fauna relies on our tree as a smorgasbord of delights.

These spiders are tiny. Also known as a Flower Spider, they hide inside flowers and take down bees and other pollen-lovers by ambushing them.
