January 1st – Keeping an eye on The Storm

Watching the storm

8 seconds, ISO 125, f13.

The photo was taken at the Alstonville Family New Years Eve festival. It’s a regular in our end of year routine, a great family-friendly, alcohol-free event for kids to queue for rides … and occasionally participate on them.

As you might have guessed, The Storm is one of those vomitron amusement park rides that kids just can’t seem to get enough of. I’ve never been a ‘rides’ person, but since learning a trick or two with the camera I thoroughly enjoying sticking my kids on them.

With space at a premium, it was difficult to frame the whole ride, but I settled on having two pedestals rising from this ride complete their rotation. The effect came out really well.

But the greatest outcome for this photo was the couple in front of me not moving a muscle for the entire exposure time of 8 seconds.
