September 6th – Hover Fly, Part III

Hover Fly approaches

Another Hover Fly (Syrphidae) in flight, and much like previous encounters, he had his sights on our Rocket that had gone to flower.

I noticed a few around the garden, so I decided to do this properly and retrieved the tripod.

Put simply these photo’s rank among the most rewarding macro shots I’ve taken. It addressed my fascination of eyes, but being able to frame the insect in flight was a big  win.

Here’s another shot, once landed and feeding on the delicious, pollen coated flower. Considering this is a recurring food source for this winged insect, I guess the average Syrphidae doesn’t mind a little bitterness and spice.
