June 6th – Disused

Another shot of the abandoned Casino to Murwillumbah railway. This section is along the Naughtons Gap Road crossing at Whittons Rd.

Despite several years of lobbying, the railway is unlikely ever to reopen, with numerous crossings throughout the journey now sealed under roadway.

Enter the Northern Rivers Rail Trail (or NRRT). This bold $75m project hopes to boost tourism in the area, providing walking and riding trails along certain sections of the antiquated railway.

The proposal would link unique sites in towns along the old line including the Casino mini-rail, the Eltham railway cottage, and the fireflies and glow-worms in the Tweed shire.

It would make a terrific photographic journey, despite the recent removal of the classic old bridge near Binna Burra, a few kilometres outside of Bungalow.
