March 18th – Dogleg Tunnel, Cockatoo Island

Dogleg Tunnel - Cockatoo Island HDR

This photo was taken during our visit to the amazing Cockatoo Island at the end of the January.

This is an HDR photo taken inside the Dogleg Tunnel – a 187 metre long, 3 metre wide tunnel excavated through the sandstone running between the eastern and southern aprons of the industrial island.

I’ve probably mentioned before, but I find that HDR is beneficial, or even excels, in these mid-light environments. This shot also highlights the benefit of an ultra-portable tripod.

The Dogleg Tunnel was built in 1915, and initially horse and cart were employed to pull equipment and personnel. Later in life the Dogleg Tunnel doubled as a bomb shelter during World War II.

The HDR image itself is a 4-shot bracket, taken with the assistance of Magic Lantern and processed using Photomatix Pro 5.
