Some more muckabout with the 50mm at its full f1.8 capability.
I believe what we have here is a Tall Bearded Iris. More specifically, the ‘Fair Dinkum’ Tall Bearded Iris. Where they got the Fair Dinkum from is anyones guess.
This Iris is the biggest I’ve seen, the emerging bud was as big as the palm of my hand. The blooming Iris had huge petals, and the “beard” was very pronounced. I foresee a date with the macro in the not-too-distant future.
As for the 50mm lens, I was chatting to someone recently who shares my enthusiasm for casual photography, though we also share an apparent lack of skills required for serious portrait photography.
Shooting a single person can be tricky enough managing the depth at the widest apertures, but the degree of difficulty increases when you add more people to the scene.
You have to consider several planes – is everyone standing in a line, equal distance from the lens? Family photo’s are even tricker, where you have numerous subjects all at different heights.
And this is before you press the shutter button and realise that someone has blinked. Perhaps portraiture isn’t my thing, but I’ll keep working on it.
