It seems like it’s been a while since I’ve done some gratuitous macro, so what better than a grasshopper taking shelter from the persistent rain.
If only there was cricket-speak for ‘madman with camera and flash’, he or she could have been warned.
In all honesty I couldn’t identify this insect, basically because there are so many crickets, grasshoppers, locusts and katydids that it’s hard to tell them apart. The closest I can assume is a Giant Grasshopper (Valanga irregularis) – this guy was pretty big, and they can grow up to 9cm long.
What I find fascinating is the antennae – they are simply massive, held onto the grasshopper by tiny windscreen wiper-like hinges.
As for macro, there’s one thing that constantly amazes me – eyes. The final image here is a crop, but there’s enough detail in the eyes to have cropped nice and tight.
