June 21st – Winter Wonderland

Winter Wonderland

There are 2 great levellers when it comes to physical activities – ten pin bowling, and ice skating.

However when an ice skating rink appears in the middle of Sydney, who could resist the opportunity of open air skating with the city as the backdrop.

As part of the Sydney Winter Festival, Darling Harbour’s Tumbalong Park has been converted into a Winter Wonderland. For those enduring Sydney’s bitter 17* mid-winter days the ice skating is the main attraction, but there are various commercially sponsored activities, including bobbing around in Darling Harbour’s glassy (rainbow coloured?) water in an inflated sphere.

It must be 25 years since I last skated, but under the watchful eyes and white knuckled grasping fingers of our kids, we managed to fumble our way around a few times. There were a couple of spills, which resulted in tears and laughs, usually not from the same individual.
