April 16th – Reading between the lines

One thing I really enjoy doing is reading with my children. Even better is watching them read.

For several years we’ve been regular attendants at our local library Story Time. More recently we’ve seen the benefits of this, not only do we tuck four or five books into our library bag, but we also have books coming home from school and daycare libraries.

But the kids can’t have all the fun. I’ve reunited with old school friends, ex-work colleagues, parents from schools, daycares and parents groups. But there’s little to beat the shame of being ‘shooshed’ by librarians.

I particularly like this quote from Emilie Buchwald;

Children are made readers on the laps of their parents.

Reading books to kids is our chance for theatre. It’s one part of our evening routine that I love, and not only because it means they are 15 minutes from sleep.
